Spaces, Pens and AI Allocation
Create spaces for each location, watch the daily occupancy grid, and use Suggest allocation to place pets automatically.
Spaces are the physical areas pets stay in — pens, kennels, suites, grooming bays and training areas. WagDay tracks which pets are in which space each day, and can suggest an allocation for you.
The Spaces section is restricted to Managers and above. Staff below Manager can open a location's day view and preview an AI suggestion, but can't change spaces or apply an allocation.
Live and Manage tabs
Open Facilities → Spaces. The page has two tabs:
- Live — a card per location. Select a location to open its day view with the occupancy grid for a chosen date.
- Manage — the full list of spaces across all your locations, where Managers create and edit them.
Creating spaces
Spaces always belong to one location. To add one:
- Go to Facilities → Spaces and open the Manage tab (or use Add Space from the sidebar).
- Click Add Space.
- Enter the space's details and save.
Each space has:
- Name — e.g. "Pen 3" or "Puppy Suite"
- Type — Indoor, Outdoor, Suite, Grooming Bay or Training Area
- Size class — Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large; matched against each pet's size class
- Capacity — how many pets the space holds at once
- Energy tag — used by the allocation suggestion when grouping pets
- Active — inactive spaces are hidden from the occupancy grid, and the allocation suggestion takes the flag into account
Managers can also edit or remove a space from its actions menu in the Manage list.
The per-day occupancy grid
From the Live tab, select a location. Use the date picker to choose a day — the grid shows one card per active space with:
- The space name and a type + size badge (e.g. "Indoor M")
- Occupied/capacity counts, plus an available count or a Full badge
- A colour-coded occupancy bar (green, amber as it fills, red at full)
- A chip per assigned pet, coloured by booking status — pending, confirmed or checked in. Hover a chip to see the booking status and the assignment's start and end times.
Spaces with no pets assigned for the day say so on the card.
Assigning and moving pets between spaces
Assignments are made from the booking, not the grid. Open the booking and use Assign space (or Change space to move a pet): the dialog lists the spaces available for that booking's time period, with each space's type, size and capacity, and assigns the pet to the one you pick. The occupancy grid updates to reflect the change.
Suggest allocation (AI)
On a location's day view, click Suggest allocation. WagDay builds a proposed pet → space plan for that date and shows a preview before anything changes.
The suggestion considers:
- Bookings at that location for the date with status Pending, Confirmed or Checked in
- Each pet's size class, temperament status and energy level
- Pet-to-pet relationships (which pets should or shouldn't share)
- Existing assignments already made for the day
- Each space's type, size class, capacity, active flag and energy tag
The preview shows an overall fit percentage, each proposed assignment with a confidence score and the reasons behind it, any warnings, and an Unassigned list explaining pets that couldn't be placed.
Only Managers and above can apply a suggestion — other roles see the preview only. When a Manager clicks Apply allocation, WagDay re-checks the hard constraints before writing, then replaces that day's existing assignments for the affected bookings with the suggested ones.
